Expert psychology support for cancer wellbeing

Sandy Hutchison

Sandy is a clinical psychologist with 25 years experience in health and clinical psychology. She worked as a clinical psychologist within the health system for 11 years at Greenslopes Hospital and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in medicine, women’s health, and oncology. In 2004 she was employed by the Cancer Council Queensland where she developed the Tiered Model of Care, a stepped care model for screening and triaging the psychosocial needs of people affected by cancer, and established the Cancer Counselling Service. She was the Executive Manager of the state-wide Cancer Counselling Service for 11 years, providing tele-based, face-to-face and group psychological interventions to people distressed by cancer.

Sandy has a Masters of Clinical Psychology from the University of Queensland, has a Clinical Endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), is a full member of the Australian Psychological Society, a Board approved supervisor, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland. She has supervised postgraduate students and lectured for the University of Queensland, Griffith University and Queensland University of Technology. She has provided training to health professionals in communication skills, decision support, suicide prevention and management, the impact of cancer, and the Tiered Model of Care, has presented at conferences and is author/co-author of multiple publications relating to adjustment to cancer.

In addition to private practice Sandy is the senior clinical psychologist at Karuna Hospice Services, Windsor, a home-based palliative care and bereavement service. Her areas of expertise and passion are health psychology, psycho-oncology, chronic illness, palliative care and end-of-life care, grief and bereavement, couple support during illness, decision support. Her therapeutic approach draws from cognitive behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and in particular, mindfulness and self-compassion based therapies.

Outside work, Sandy is passionate about spending time with family, travelling, reading, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle and busy social life
